“We have many people who came from Cuba, who were expelled or who fled from Cuba… they came on rafts, they went through shark-infested waters. I don’t know how they did it. And it was many years ago. Many would like to return,” the president added.
President Claudia Sheinbaum has rejected the decision by the government of her United States counterpart, Donald Trump, to impose tariffs on those countries that send crude oil to Cuba and has warned that it could trigger a far-reaching humanitarian crisis.
Over the weekend, Trump assured that Mexico suspended the shipment of oil to Cuba after his direct request to Claudia Sheinbaum. However, the president of Mexico denied that this issue had been discussed in her last telephone conversation.
Trump has also said that he began a dialogue with authorities in Havana and estimates that they will culminate in an agreement, at a time when he is putting pressure on the island after the arrest of former Venezuelan ruler Nicolás Maduro.
The Cuban government accuses Trump of wanting to “suffocate” its population, which periodically suffers from blackouts and lack of fuel at gas stations.
Trump and his Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, the Miami-born son of Cuban exiles, have made no secret of their desire to bring about regime change in Havana.
After Maduro’s fall, the Republican president warned Havana to “reach an agreement soon” or face unspecified consequences.
