The Pandemic Fund of the World Health Organization (WHO), financed by the World Bank, will support the project on the subject presented by Mexico with $25 million, reported the Ministry of Health (Ssa).

The resource will be used to strengthen, prepare and respond to pandemics, with actions to reinforce early warning, surveillance and detection of new pathogens that put health at risk.

To do this, the One Health approach proposed by the WHO will be taken into account, which consists of having a comprehensive approach to the health of people, animals and ecosystems. The links between the three areas are recognized to establish new methods of disease surveillance and control.

The Mexican project proposed giving priority to border areas and intersectoral coordination. The decision to support the country was made during the third round of financing of the international mechanism.

In a statement, the Ssa indicated that other activities to be carried out with the financing will focus on modernizing surveillance and epidemiological information systems, expanding diagnostic capacity and strengthening the laboratory network.

Rapid response and early detection

Rapid response and early detection mechanisms for health threats will also be promoted and staff will be trained on human, animal and environmental health issues.

The federal agency highlighted that the decision to financially support Mexico’s plan “represents international recognition of the technical work of national health institutions and the federal government’s commitment to cooperation and global health security. The proposal was selected for its technical solidity, its potential impact and orientation towards cost-effectiveness.”

Pandemic Fund Executive Director Priya Basu congratulated the country on its decision to create a more resilient and responsive health system. He trusted that more support can be provided as progress is made in the preparation agenda to face future pandemics.

The Secretary of Health, David Kershenobich, noted that “the government of Mexico maintains its firm commitment to the preventive work of the Ssa through a robust epidemiological surveillance system that contributes to the well-being of the country and the region of the Americas.”
