Mexico will be the headquarters of the APEC Summit in 2028, as agreed by acclamation by the leaders of the 21 economies represented in this forum.
“We won the 2028 headquarters, Mexico will be the headquarters of APEC after many years. This will allow us be a bridge between the Americas and Asia. The entire Pacific basin will be, in 2028, in Mexico,” said the Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, at the end of his participation in the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in Gyeongju, Republic of Korea.
APEC brings together 21 economies from said basin, which, together, represent more than 60% of the GDP and about half of global trade.
That Mexico chairs and organizes the APEC summit in 2028 is one of the agreements reached in the Gyeongju declaration, where Ebrard attended with the representation of President Claudia Sheinbaum.
“The fact that they have voted in favor of Mexico being the host in 2028 speaks of the importance they give to our country“said Ebrard, according to a press release released this Sunday.
On the other hand, Ebrard spoke, separately, with senior officials of the United States government: the secretaries of Commerce, Howard Lutnick, and the Treasury, Scott Bessent, as well as with the trade representative, Jamieson Greer.
“We advanced some conversations with the United States. Here we go. Every week we have to move forward, we achieve some new steps,” Ebrard commented.
“We had a good conversation about how we are going to move forward in the coming weeks… most likely in the next few days we will meet again in Washington,” he added.
He highlighted that there is good progress on the issues that both countries had agreed to review in order to remove irritants or differences that could distract the review of the T-MEC in 2026.
APEC is a regional forum that brings together 21 Pacific economies: Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, United States and Vietnam. It promotes free trade, investment, sustainable growth, digital innovation and economic inclusion, fostering cooperation between governments and the private sector to strengthen prosperity in the region.
