MÉRIDA, Mexico – The government of Mexico will ensure safe transportation 1,400 migrants a day to its northern border to attend the CBP One appointment.
Migrants who obtain their appointment from Chiapas and Tabasco will be transferred with the aim of ensuring that they travel safely and in an orderly manner to the neighboring country to the north, said Mexican Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcenaaccording to local media reports.
Since August 23, migrants can access the appointment program of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Office (CBP) from southeastern Mexico, without traveling to Mexico City.
“If people can get their appointments from Chiapas and Tabasco and do not have to travel to Mexico City at the 19th Parallel or to the border, then once those people get an appointment, we will transport them safely to the United States border,” explained the official, in a meeting with representatives of the 25 UN offices in Mexico.
The head of Mexican diplomacy recalled that CBP grants 1,500 appointments daily to migrants, with the aim of ensuring that they arrive in the United States in a regular and orderly manner.
“Migrants or people on the move suffer a lot because they go through many problems of extortion, kidnapping, violation of human rights and that is what we have to avoid as much as possible,” he added.
Bárcena stressed that this agreement with the US represents a great achievement.
During the migrant crisis in December 2023, there were up to 12,500 encounters per day on the border between Mexico and the United States, the foreign minister concluded.
CBP Appointments in Southern Mexico
Precisely, starting from August 23rd the states of Chiapas and Tabasco were added to the areas in central and northern Mexico from which migrants can request appointments through the CBP One application.
This will reduce the risks for migrants entering through Mexico’s southern border, who will no longer have to cross and remain in the center and north of the country to access the application.
The measure also benefits the Mexican government, which will not have to deal with migrants crossing and staying in central and northern areas of the country just to request one of the 1,200 daily CBP appointments.
“We are constantly working with our partners in the Mexican government and working together to adjust policies and practices in response to the latest migration trends and security needs,” CBP said in a statement.
Cuban migration crisis
In July, there was a slight decrease in the number of Cubans entering the United States, although the figure remains high and, following the temporary suspension of the humanitarian parole program, an increase in access by land, across the border with Mexico, and by sea, through the Straits of Florida, is expected.
According to the entity, the July figure represents the lowest entry recorded in the first nine months of fiscal year 2024, which began in October 2023. In that period, 15,645 Cubans were registered, 2,000 fewer than in June, when 17,563 citizens of the Island arrived in the country.
