MIAMI, United States.- Some 39 migrants, 20 of them Cubans, were found hiding in a hotel in the state of San Luis Potosí, in central Mexico, the National Migration Institute (INM) reported in a statement Thursday.
The migrants were found after a verification that the authorities carried out during the first hours of this Wednesday at the property.
The group was made up, says the INM document, of 20 Cubans, four Hondurans, two Venezuelans, two Colombians, one Dominican, two citizens of Tajikistan and eight from Georgia.
For its part, in another statement issued by the INM, the Aztec institution lamented the death of several Central American migrants who lost their lives inside a railroad car, located near the city of Piedras Negras, Coahuila state, bordering Mexico. Texas.
The INM, which assured it would help in the repatriation of the bodies, explained that among the possible causes of death is “a possible severe dehydration exacerbated by heat stroke.”
The security personnel of the Ferromex company were the ones who found the bodies of the migrants, after identifying that a foot came out of one of the wagons of the locomotive in motion.
The numbers keep going up
The migration crisis on the southern border of the United States set off alarms a few months ago. The numbers of migrants presenting themselves at US checkpoints and crossing illegally have increased considerably since October 1, 2021, the date on which the fiscal year begins in the United States.
In this regard, the Customs and Border Protection Office (CBP) detected more than 1.7 million undocumented immigrants on the border with Mexico in fiscal year 2021, which ended on September 30.
