This Friday, October 4, Cofece, together with the Antitrust Division of the United States Department of Justice and the Canadian Competition Bureau, gave a workshop aimed at officials and organizers of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This workshop included representatives of the secretariats of Economy and Foreign Relations, the National Anti-Corruption System and local governments of the host cities.
The workshop is the first of several that will be held before the event, with the objective of training those involved in the prevention, identification and reporting of collusive practices. Among the actions sought to be avoided are price manipulation and illegal market sharing, practices that could harm consumers and affect competition during the World Cup.
This initiative is part of a continuous effort between the three competition authorities, who had already worked together in June during the forum “Actions for the protection of sport in Latin America and the Caribbean”, organized by the United Nations Office against Drugs and Crime. On that occasion, the importance of protecting competition in major sporting events such as the World Cup was highlighted.
José Manuel Haro, Elvia Villarreal and Carlos García Cueva participated on behalf of Cofece, explaining the measures that the commission has implemented within this international collaboration. Information exchange mechanisms between the three nations were also addressed, based on international best practices, with the aim of reducing the negative impact that anti-competitive behavior can have on the Mexican economy.
