The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, confirmed that next Friday he will hold a telephone conversation with his American counterpart Joe Biden, at the proposal of the White House.
López Obrador said that he still did not know “what the purpose is, I think it is a call to share points of view and I think this helps a lot. It may be the immigration issue; it may be what is happening in Russia with Ukraine; it could be the Summit of the Americas.”
Later, the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Marcelo Ebrard, declared: “Mexico would like all countries to be invited [a la Cumbre], no to some yes and to others no. Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela are part of the Americas and should be there. This, he added, is one of the issues that will be addressed in the conversation between the leaders.
Ebrard added that other likely issues to be discussed will be regional development, migration, weapons, the Mexican position on the war in Ukraine and the need to implement common action within the G20 to reduce the inflation experienced in the world economy. .
The foreign minister said that Mexico hopes that the ninth Summit of the Americas, to be held in June in Los Angeles, will result in “the beginning of a new stage with the United States that is nothing more than the same as what we have experienced in the last decades, but that there is a different position, more inclusive, more respectful, more concerned because there are definitely investments.
Regarding the trip to Central America that President López Obrador will carry out, Ebrard said that it will begin on May 5 with a visit to Guatemala, continue in El Salvador, Honduras, Belize and end in Cuba. López Obrador and President Miguel Díaz-Canel are expected to discuss a possible agreement for the exchange of biotechnology, among other bilateral issues, in Havana.
