Cuba maintains that it maintains its commitment “to a regular, safe and orderly migration” and insists on “the danger and life-threatening conditions represented by illegal departures from the country by sea,” recalls a dispatch from the agency EFE.

In the last year, the southern border of the United States has welcomed a record number of migrants from the island, which exceeded 220,000 in fiscal year 2022 —between October 1, 2021 and September 30, 2022—, according to the Office of Customs and Border Protection of said nation.

Faced with this situation, Washington included Cubans at the beginning of this year in a policy to welcome 30,000 monthly migrants from the island, Venezuela, Haiti and Nicaragua.

In parallel, it established the expulsion to Mexico —with the acceptance of the Mexican authorities— of migrants from those countries, including Cuba, who try to cross into its territory irregularly.
