Mexico returns 77 Cubans seeking to reach the United States

This Thursday, 77 Cubans who had joined the caravans on their way to the United States were returned to the Island. These migrants “left legally,” according to public Latin PressTherefore, since they have not violated any immigration law, they are not considered “returnees.”

The second general director of Identification, Immigration and Immigration of the Island, Lázaro Delgado, reported that the returnees were given a PCR test to detect covid-19 and were transferred to their respective provinces, without giving any further details. .

Delgado specified that this is the fourth operation carried out with Mexico. On June 23 they were returned 89 Cubans (20 women and 69 men), who “did not verify their regular stay” and were detained in the states of Chiapas, Coahuila, Nuevo León, Oaxaca, Tabasco, Tamaulipas and Yucatán.

The return of the 77 Cubans occurs just the day that Mexico announced a “pilot plan” to regularize migrants who will be offered refuge, the granting of visas and employment programs.

At the beginning of last month, the Mexican authorities reported that a total of 438 Cubans in an irregular situation had been returned to the island in the first ten months of 2021.

The return of the 77 Cubans occurs just on the day that in Mexico the Undersecretary for Human Rights, Population and Migration, Alejandro Encinas, announced a “pilot plan” to regularize migrants who will be offered refuge, the granting of visas and employment programs.

According to latest statistics published by the National Commission for Refugees of Mexico (Comar), as of November 30, 8,148 Cubans had requested refuge and 2,538 have been approved. Many carry out the process in order to obtain a humanitarian visa to be able to transit through the country towards the northern border, cross into the United States and request asylum.
