Mexico reports almost seven thousand Nicaraguan refugee applications in 2022

The exodus of Nicaraguans does not stop. Between January and August 2022, the Mexican Commission for Refugee Assistance (eat) has received a total of 6,921 requests for international protection from migrants from Nicaragua.

The figures registered by the Aztec authorities set a record for the displacement of Nicaraguans to Mexico, since in 2021, around 2,895 Nicaraguans requested refuge in this country and in the first eight months of 2022, that figure multiplied by 2.4 times more.

With this statistic, Mexico joins the destinations of refuge for Nicaraguans fleeing the repression and persecution of the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo.

According to Comar, they have favored 1,744 Nicaraguans with international protection and 473 have been granted “Complementary Protection”, a condition that Mexico extends to foreigners who have not been recognized as refugees, but which gives them the guarantee of non-return to the country where they live. his life is at risk.

In addition, Nicaragua is positioned among the top 10 sending countries of asylum seekers in Mexico. In 2020, the nationals ranked eighth with 802 petitions. In 2021, Comar reported 2,895 refugee applications from Nicaraguans and they ranked ninth.

While in 2022, the Central American country is in fifth place among applicants with almost 7 thousand requests, only surpassed by Venezuela, Haiti, Cuba and Honduras.

The repression, persecution and threats of the Ortega dictatorship force Nicaraguans to leave the country in search of protecting their lives or improving their economic condition.

Human rights organizations have pointed out that Nicaragua is experiencing an unprecedented migration crisis, due to political persecution, repression, harassment and the economic crisis that persists in the country.
