Mexico regresses in the fight against corruption compared to 2014

Already with Claudia Sheinbaum in the presidency, his administration has tried to put an end to corrupt practices, detected even in the Secretary of the Navy, where high-ranking officials operated a fuel smuggling network in customs.

His security cabinet even arrested municipal presidents and other public servants involved in extortion schemes and linked to criminal groups.

Despite this strategy, the CPI 2025 shows that there is still much to do for Mexico to be a transparent and corruption-free country.

“To improve people’s lives and strengthen resilience against organized crime, governments must prioritize the fight against corruption. This means protecting fundamental freedoms, enforcing the law through a strong and independent Judiciary, strengthening international cooperation in cases of corruption and making public procurement more transparent,” said Luciana Torchiaro, Regional Advisor for Latin America and the Caribbean at Transparency International.
