Mexico promotes innovation to produce large and open export routes

Mexico has already designed and tested them, the next step is to produce them at scale. The needs of the country mark the urgency. For example, the advance of diabetes requires thousands of dialysis equipment, which until now comes from abroad.

“We have to change the exports we make from Mexico. In collaboration also with the Ministry of Economy, we have to see which products already have the possibility of being produced industrially, because we have many prototypes of different equipment, but we now need to make them on a large scale,” he explained.

Ruiz said in the Innova Fest Latam 2025 held in Morelos, that Mexico has the capacity to manufacture devices with sufficient quality to supply public and private hospitals. COFEPRIS and specialists from IMSS, ISSSTE and the Ministry of Health refine the evaluations that will allow its clinical use and eventual export.

Preventing climate risks also opens opportunities. New buoys and monitoring systems generate real-time data about the sea and atmosphere in a country facing more intense hurricanes, violent rains and recurring damage.

The technologies seek to protect communities and build a Mexican industry capable of supplying them in other markets. Ruiz highlights that the university ecosystem has already created a solid foundation. UNAM, IPN, UAM and research centers accumulate equipment, patents and medicines with the possibility of scaling.

The government prepares funds to promote public and private companies that manufacture these products. The goal is for knowledge to reach every corner of the country and for the industry to be strengthened with new production lines.

The case of TARUK reflects this model. The electric bus developed with government support can travel up to 300 kilometers without recharging. It already has orders from state governments and export options.

Project support

The Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, announced the creation of an investment fund that promises to open a different stage for national projects. The country wants innovation to advance beyond the laboratory and reach the market with public and private support.

The decision comes at a time when more than thirty countries, dozens of universities and eighty investment funds meet at the STS Forum. Ebrard says that this meeting confirms the size of the talent available and the urgency of taking advantage of it.

The Mexican economy needs technology, not just manufacturing. The government seeks that minds with international experience guide the industrial decisions that Mexico will make in the following years.

The fund will function as a bridge between the prototypes exhibited by research centers and the real possibility of them becoming companies. The scheme will start with 800 million pesos by 2025 and will reach 1,600 million in 2026.

“The Ministry of Economy and the fund of funds, which is the Sovereign Fund of Mexico, which by instructions of the President of the Republic, Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, we began with this firm, to channel, allocate, direct resources from the Ministry of Economy and National Finance to companies, to entrepreneurs, to many developments that are out there, so that they can scale, so that they can develop their projects,” explains the official.

The objective is to combine that capital with private investment to multiply its reach. Ebrard assures that for the first time Mexico will have a mechanism capable of promoting projects that require high financial risks. The investment committee will select initiatives that generate a public good and that present economic viability.

The initial portfolio includes technologies that today await their industrial leap: semiconductors designed in Mexico, a national language of artificial intelligence, aircraft with current certification and robots for storage systems. The secretary emphasizes that many of these ideas have survived for years with minimal resources.

He gives as an example a hydrogen vehicle developed at Cinvestav since 2009 with less than five million pesos and a medical ventilator created during the pandemic that has already gained access to the market and is processing its permit with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

For Ebrard, Mexican science has already demonstrated that it produces value. Now it will have the necessary financing to convert that value into economic growth.
