According to the draft decree to establish the characteristics and mint the three new coins, these will have a nominal value of 25, 10 and 20 pesos, respectively, but they will be quoted daily for the value of the metal from which they are made.
“In the case of commemorative gold and silver coins, their nominal value will only have illustrative effects, but they will enjoy legal tender for the equivalent in pesos of their daily price and, for this purpose, the Bank of Mexico will determine the price of these coins daily based on the international price of the fine metal contained in them,” the initiative indicates.
According to the president, the three coins will be widely appreciated by the national and international market, which will contribute to enriching the numismatic tradition of Mexico.
This will allow the culture of our country to be projected “through the commemoration of an event with international impact, in addition to encouraging savings and investment,” according to the document received by the Permanent Commission of Congress.
In the background, it is recalled that on June 6, 2025, the decree was published by which the characteristics of nine different commemorative coins of the 2026 FIFA World Cup were established.
These, it is indicated, have generated great expectations in the population, because “in addition to being collectible and celebrating this sporting event, they are testimony and legacy of our culture and identity, as well as of Mexico’s ability to be the only host country of said event for the third time.”
Furthermore, the president recalled in her proposal that for the 1986 FIFA World Cup four commemorative gold coins and fifteen silver coins were issued, in addition to an additional series of two gold coins, one silver coin and one cupro-nickel coin.
