Mexico presents to the UN its plan to stop the war between Russia and Ukraine

“Mexico calls on all Member States to work together to achieve the peace that we all yearn for, to work together in post-pandemic recovery with a sustainable and resilient approach that fully considers the needs and priorities of all countries, and that puts people at the center of our actions,” said the foreign minister.

The foreign minister stated that the Security Council has not been able to fulfill the mandate conferred by the United Nations charter because it failed to prevent the war, nor with the measures that put a stop to the armed aggression and even less managed to direct a diplomatic process to seek a solution through dialogue and negotiation.

“Faced with the paralysis of the Security Council, we must all offer a complementary diplomatic channel to those already in existence to interact with the parties in conflict with a view to reducing tensions and channeling the indispensable mediation,” he said.

Nuclear weapons continue to represent the worst threat to the very survival of humanity.”

Marcelo Ebrard, Secretary of Foreign Relations.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s proposal consists of establishing a Committee for Dialogue and Peace, which would be made up of the heads of state of India, the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, of India; Pope Francis and the Secretary General of the UN, António Guterres.

The goal of that effort would be to seek an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine and to set up talks between President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine and President Vladimir Putin of Russia.

It would also be the objective of that committee to establish a dialogue with the purpose of implementing a five-year global truce so that nations suspend military actions and provocations, as well as nuclear and missile tests, to occupy that time to address “the lacerating” problems of poverty, health and violence.
