The Government seeks with this measure to counteract the hardening of immigration policy on the border, but does not convince the Mexican population
A special lottery for Mexican migrants in the United States: this is the idea recently launched by the Government of Mexico. Almost 12 million Mexicans live in the United States, where President Donald Trump, who returned to the White House in January, has implemented a strict immigration policy.
The raffle, scheduled for September 15 -National Faff of Mexico, which marks the beginning of the War of Independence against Spain in 1810-, promises to distribute a total of 424.5 million pesos, or approximately 22.8 million dollars.
Distrust and boycott
The ticket, decorated with a heart surrounded by images of agave and corn cobs, carries the legend: “Mexico, with m migrant.” In the bustling center of the capital, they are sold in the kiosks.
Although the National Lottery is a real institution in Mexico -with 250 years of existence, it is the oldest in America -this special edition has difficulty capturing customers. “No! I do not have the lottery of the migrants of September 15 … not that they do not want to sell them, but that people do not buy them, ”confesses a seller.
The reasons: a price almost ten times higher than that of traditional tickets and distrust of the so -called “exceptional” raffles organized by the government. The previous head of state, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, organized them to finance public hospitals and even to give the former presidential plane. «While it is a tradition for many customers … the fact that they intervene in the lottery with their special draws for this or that, many do not like. Very often, customers boycott! “With this approach, people are disappointed and think that the lottery is a fraud,” he continues.
National Festival dedicated to migrants
Despite criticism, the Government of Mexico hopes to raise up to 100,000 pesos (approximately 4.5 million euros) through this initiative. This amount will finance consular services to help migrants. “This will be used to strengthen the assistance we provide to migrants in the United States through consulates,” said President Claudia Sheinbaum. “This year, Independence Day celebrations will be dedicated to our migrant brothers and sisters,” he added.
In recent months, many Mexicans have been victims of raids organized by US authorities to arrest and deport undocumented immigrants. According to the Mexican government, approximately 75,000 people have decided to return voluntarily since then. The authorities fear that this massive return will test the social infrastructure and the country’s reception capacity.
