Mexico is the country without war with the most journalists murdered in 2025, according to a report

Of the number of journalists murdered, two thirds lost their lives in the context of armed conflicts. The Gaza Strip, Ukraine and Yemen were the most dangerous territories for journalists.

Gaza is by far the deadliest area, with 57 media professionals killed this year. The war in Ukraine and the civil conflict in Yemen follow closely, with 11 deaths in each of these scenarios.

Mexico, despite not being at war, was positioned as the country with the most journalists murdered in 2025 outside of an armed conflict. With 10 victims, it even surpasses Sudan, which has recorded seven murders of journalists this year.

Within the framework of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, which is celebrated this November 2, the PEC launched an urgent call to the international community.

The organization urged UN member states to support the creation of an independent commission to investigate serious violations against journalists.

It also called for issuing recommendations to strengthen local laws, accountability mechanisms and reparations for victims.

The PEC emphasizes that impunity for crimes against journalists sends a dangerous message:

“When a journalist is murdered and the crime goes unpunished, this tragedy also sends the message that killing journalists is acceptable. It sends a chilling signal that the powerful can silence voices without consequences.”

In addition to Mexico, other countries recording murders of journalists in 2025 include India (6), Pakistan (5), Bangladesh (4), Ecuador (4), Iran (4), and the Philippines (3), among others.

In total, there are murders of journalists in 21 countries.
