Mexico investigates the murder of six migrants at the hands of the Army

Claudia Sheinbaum asks to wait for final count and avoid violence in Venezuela

This week the UN warned about the role of the military in Mexico’s security

The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, assured that the prosecutor’s office is already investigating the death of six migrants this week in the state of Chiapas, at the hands of the Army.

Human rights defense associations blame the militarization policy of his predecessor Andrés Manuel López Obrador for acts of violence suffered by foreigners on the border.

The new president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, revealed that the six migrants murdered by the military in Chiapas were of Egyptian, Salvadoran and Peruvian nationality. He also said that the Attorney General’s Office had elements at its disposal and promised justice.

“Vehicles are passing by. Supposedly the Army gives them the signal to stop. The vehicles do not stop and then the Army shoots. The Sedena (Secretary of the National Army) says that the vehicle in which these people were driving was a vehicle ‘that is usually used by criminal groups in the area’. So what is known is that this attack occurs in a context of a transfer of the vehicle with these people who today we know are migrants,” says Eduardo Guerrero Lomelí, lawyer in the international area of the Center for Human Rights in Mexico.

This situation occurs in a context of violence in Chiapas, a state in the south of the country. Violence caused particularly by the presence of criminal groups, explains lawyer Guerrero.

“With the participation of the National Guard, with the participation of the Sedena and the Navy in immigration policy tasks, the number of complaints of violations and abuses committed by military agents in the framework of these immigration tasks has increased, which These are tasks that do not correspond to them as military agents. In recent years they have carried out immigration detention tasks, customs control, and participation in border patrols,” he denounces.

This week the UN warned about the role of the military in Mexico’s security.

The new president replied: “for those who criticize that this is militarization, it is totally false. In our country there are no human rights violations.”

For the lawyer of the international area of the Center for Human Rights in Mexico, what happened in Chiapas, on the first day of the Sheinbaum government, is “unfortunately very symbolic, because it begins its six-year term with the approved reform that leads to assigning the National Guard to the Army “Well, it is precisely a demonstration, I insist, very symbolic, of how this militaristic strategy of public security can lead to this type of human rights violations.”
