Mexico insists on inaugurating the Mayan Train in December and there are sections with less than 50%

The construction of the Mayan Train is advancing slowly between controversy, protection from environmental groups and an increase in its construction cost, going from 6,500 million dollars in 2018 to 11,800 million in 2022. The Government of Mexico announced this Saturday the delivery of four wagons .

Despite the optimism of Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador that dynamic tests will be carried out next “September 1” and that it will be inaugurated in December, progress is 30% in some of the seven sections into which the work is divided.

Section 1 goes from Chiapas to Campeche (Palenque-Escárcega) and has an extension of 226 kilometers (km) of track. The 2 includes 234 km of track that goes from Escárcega to Calkiní. The 3 has an extension of 159.7 km of track, which extends from Calkiní to Izamal. In the 4 a route of 239 km is covered between Izamal to Cancun. Section 5 has a 110 km route from Playa del Carmen to Tulum. The 6 from Tulum to Chetumal has an extension of 255.8 km and the 7, from Chetumal to Escárcega, with 254.5 km.

Section 3, so far, is the one that presents the greatest progress. It has 129 kilometers of finished roads out of the 159 km of the total route between Campeche and Yucatán. While section 4 has 39 km left to finish, so it is expected that the announced tests will be carried out in this area.

The Maya Train, which will cover 1,500 kilometers between Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán and Quintana Roo, only in section 1, which will cover the route from Palenque to Escárcega, has advanced 150 of 226 kilometers of track, according to the general director of the National Fund for the Promotion of Tourism (Fonatur), Javier May Rodríguez.

This official announced on July 3 that “in mid-August the Mayan Train will begin to run on the track between Cancun and Merida for its dynamic tests.”

The work is slow in sections 5 with barely 20% of what was projected, 6 has 25% progress and 7 25%. Various activists have stated that López Obrador’s flagship work has focused on “ deforest the jungle, cover cenotes, and damage corals” .

For this work, Mexico bought Rajón stone from Cuba to obtain ballast. The deal has so far been a failure. Of the 20,000 tons of stone material that were sent last March from Cienfuegos (Cuba) on the ship melodyonly 7,000 were downloaded.

In February the ship left the island gazibey with 17,000 tons of which could not be landed due to the lack of infrastructure in the ports. Both vessels turned off their radars. A source confirmed to 14ymediowhat a debt of 8,000,000 dollars due to the transfer of the Cuban stone made the operation fail.
