Mexico has 10 million food voucher users; going for 250,000 more

“The food vouchers have been implemented in our country for 40 years,” said the president of Aseval, Marco Martínez, in an interview with Expansión. “Our goal this year is to increase 250,000 new users; we know it is not easy.”

Food vouchers are a work benefit that workers receive in addition to their salary; They can be received monthly or biweekly, as provided by the company.

In order for a company to offer this benefit, it must provide records of social security registrations and Infonavit payments to guarantee that the person is a formal worker and thus avoid fraud.

The amount received by workers can be increased in accordance with the UMAs and The maximum limit that a worker can receive in 2025 is 3,450 pesos.

Martínez highlights that workers receive, on average, 1,400 pesos per month and these vouchers can only be used to purchase groceries or food. Aseval figures highlight that 80% of vouchers are redeemed in self-service stores and pharmacies.

The manager hopes that given the increases in the minimum wage as well as the increase in the UMA, the average amount that workers receive will increase.

“We estimate that, as has historically occurred, this amount given monthly to the worker will grow,” he assured.

Data from Inegi indicate that Mexicans allocate 30% of their income to food.

According to Martínez, only the government issues paper grocery vouchers, while companies had to migrate towards plastics thanks to a 2014 reform that only allowed this benefit to be deducted from taxes for card-based grocery vouchers.
