Mexico grants visitor cards to migrant victims of bus hijacking

The National Institute of Migration granted Visitor Cards for Humanitarian Reasons (TVRH) to migrants who had been victims of kidnapping while traveling on a bus in Mexico. Among the kidnapped migrants were people from Venezuela, Honduras, Brazil, Cuba, Haiti and El Salvador.

Some 48 migrants from the group of 50 who were kidnapped a few days ago when they were traveling on a passenger bus in northern Mexico received Visitor Cards for Humanitarian Reasons (TVRH), reported this Friday, May 19, the Migration’s national institute (INM) of Mexico.

Last Tuesday, May 16, the kidnapping of 50 migrants and two drivers who were traveling from Tapachula, Chiapas state, was announced. The bus was intercepted by armed and hooded men who took them to a farm in a municipality in the neighboring state of Nuevo León, where they were held for almost two days.

On Thursday, May 18, Mexican authorities reported that they found 49 of the migrants from Venezuela, Honduras, Brazil, Cuba, Haiti and El Salvador and they were transferred to the INM delegation in San Luis Potosí (north-central state of Mexico).

The 49 migrants were 23 men, 15 women, six boys and five girls, exposed Luis Cresencio SandovalSecretary of National Defense, and specified that seven were from Venezuela, 19 from Honduras, two from Brazil, one from Cuba, 14 from Haiti and six from El Salvador.

Through a statement, the INM reported the delivery of the documents to the migrants and noted that the group of 48 beneficiaries with the cards are 17 adults who traveled alone and 31 more who were part of families with minors.

“When they were made available to the INM, during the afternoon and night of Thursday, by the attorney general’s offices of the states of Nuevo León and San Luis Potosí, they proceeded to issue the migratory documents,” the official explained. INM.

In addition, it specified that adults and minors who were in the family nucleus were under the protection and guardianship of the authorities of the System for the Comprehensive Development of the Family (DIF) of the state.

The Matehuala area, in San Luis Potosí, has aroused concern from the Government of Mexico due to the presence of kidnapping gangs that have attacked migrants transiting through the country towards the United States.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador acknowledged on Wednesday that this last event is possibly linked to the kidnapping of 121 migrants that occurred in early April in the same region.

While the head of the National Defense warned on Thursday of a deployment of 650 agents, including the Army and the National Guard, who continue to search for other migrants or people who are in this situation (kidnapping).

The fact reflects the unprecedented migratory flow in the region, with more than 2.76 million undocumented people intercepted by the United States at the border with Mexico in fiscal year 2022.
