The Under Secretary of State for Hemispheric Affairs, Brian Nichols, assured that fentanyl is produced in Mexico with imported chemical precursors, when answering a question yesterday from the Republican Senator for Tenesi, Bill Hagerty, during a legislative hearing.

Hagerty: “President López Obrador said that Mexico does not produce fentanyl. In particular, AMLO said ‘here we do not produce fentanyl’. That is a direct quote. Mr. Nichols, does Mexico produce fentanyl?”

Nichols: Fentanyl is produced in Mexico.

Hagerty: So are AMLO’s comments correct or inaccurate?

Nichols: Mexico receives chemical precursors from all over the world. Those precursors are used to produce fentanyl.

Hagerty: …in Mexico?

Nichols: In Mexico.
