Mexico City starts December program ”Drive Without Alcohol”

Mexico City starts December program ''Drive Without Alcohol''

Brugada reported that the program will operate 24 hours a day throughout Mexico City.

At the beginning of the December celebrations, the official called on citizens to celebrate, but not to drive under the influence of alcoholic beverages in order to enjoy the festivities and the family.

Thanks to this program and other road safety measures, he stated, “accidents have been reduced by 78.2%, traffic events related to alcohol consumption from 2003 to 2022, as well as fatal traffic events decreased by 77%.”

Brugada highlighted that the operation of the program has extensive participation of female personnel.

“47% of those who operate the program are women, and the command structure that directs this program is women, so it is very important to say that the successful Drive Without Alcohol program is operated and directed by women.”

He explained to citizens that there are alternatives to avoid putting themselves at risk of suffering a road accident due to alcohol: they can use a designated driver, who does not have alcohol and drives, or, where appropriate, resort to safe transportation alternatives available in the city.

“Enjoy your holidays, celebrate, hug your families, share with your friends, celebrate life, give your mother a kiss, but do not drive with alcohol. Do not drink alcoholic beverages and then drive your vehicles, there are alternatives, you can have what we call a designated driver or look for safe transportation,” he explained.

For his part, the city’s Secretary of Citizen Security (SSC), Pablo Vázquez, highlighted: “it is a permanent effort by our city to protect the life and integrity of citizens and prevent traffic events related to alcohol consumption.”

He reported that starting this Friday, December 12, and until January 11, 2026, inspection modules will be installed to prevent traffic events related to alcohol consumption.

The modules will be distributed in the 16 municipalities of Mexico City, and some of them will be located at the entrances and exits of the capital and in areas with a high incidence of road accidents.

In order to cover all these points and place them strategically, 1,300 inspection points are contemplated to prevent road accidents, with an operational capacity of 500 elements that will be in place 24 hours a day.
