Mexico City increases rental support for victims of the 2017 earthquakes

At a press conference, Head of Government Martí Batres explained that this measure was the result of requests from affected groups, who have faced an increase in rent prices in recent years, which motivated the adjustment.

“We are going to increase their monthly support from 4,000 to 5,396 pesos,” he said.

He added that this measure still needs to be approved by a technical body, but the decision has already been made to increase the monthly rent payment by 1,396 pesos.

Jabnely Maldonado, Commissioner for the Reconstruction of Mexico City, explained that to apply this adjustment during the week, modifications will be published to the Plan for Reconstruction and the resources will be requested from the Technical Committee of the Trust for the Comprehensive Reconstruction of Mexico Citywith the aim of starting the disbursement of the new amount starting in October.

“This measure involves additional resources to those already planned for the closing of the program, in the amount of 20 million pesos, of which only 7.4 are allocated for the closing of 2024,” he explained.

The head of the Reconstruction Commission explained that since 2019 – which began with the current administration – more than 393,000 grants have been provided to 13,573 affected families, with an investment of 1,569 million pesos.

He added that the Reconstruction Program, until September 2024, has a progress of 99%.

September 19 marks seven years since the 7.1 magnitude earthquake with its epicenter in Chiautla de Tapia, Puebla, which affected several municipalities in that state, Morelos, Tlaxcala and Mexico City.
