Mexico is self -sufficient in white corn, used to make the popular tortilla, but imports transgenic yellow corn from the United States, which is mainly used to feed cattle.
In an agreement published on Wednesday afternoon in the Official Gazette, the Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, reported on the annulment of several provisions of a 2023 decree that immediately prohibited the use of transgenic corn in tortillas and mass, and ordered Government agencies gradually eliminate their animal food handling.
That decree was challenged by the Office of the United States Commercial Representative (USTT) when he requested the panel, arguing that the Mexican government statements that transgenic corn is detrimental to human health were not based on the science.
The document released on the eve leaves the application of two articles and the fraction of another, which instructed local authorities in biosafety to revoke and refrain from granting authorizations for the use of genetically modified corn grain for human food.
They also ordered public entities to carry out “actions conducive to carry out the gradual substitution of genetically modified corn for animal feed and industrial use for human food.”
After the favorable panel to the United States, the Mexican authorities said they did not agree with the ruling, but that they would respect the decision.
President Claudia Sheinbaum said Thursday that, after the ruling, another panel will not be sought. “We are going to change the Constitution.”
“Today there is a meeting with the Secretary of Agriculture and Environment to be certain that this reform is being properly sent, that we all agree and that it is constitutional that cannot be sown transgenic corn in our country” , accurate.
