Mexico attracts more than 32,000 million dollars of foreign direct investment

For the first time, Mexico exceeded 30,000 million dollars of FDI since 2006. The year that it came closest to that amount was in 2013, when the purchase of Grupo Modelo and investments in the mining sector reached 28,200 million dollars.

This year, the merger of Televisa and Univisión and the restructuring of Aeroméxico gave a rise to FDI.

During the first nine months of the year, foreign investment was divided as follows: 45.2% corresponded to new investments, 43.7% was for reinvestment of profits and 11.1% came via intercompany accounts, the SE detailed in a statement.

By country of origin, with preliminary figures, the United States, Canada and Spain, Argentina and Japan are the countries from where more foreign capital arrives; while by sector, manufacturing tops the list, followed by transportation, mass media, financial services, commerce, and mining.

In 2021, Mexico was placed in the 10th position among the countries that attracted the most FDI, attracting 2% of foreign capital globally.

That year, global foreign direct investment flows amounted to 1.58 trillion dollars, while in 2020 -the year of the pandemic- the figure was 962,000 million dollars, according to the Ministry of Economy; of that total.
