Mexico at the United Nations: The Malvinas belong to Argentina

New York. In a debate on decolonization, Ambassador Juan Ramón de la Fuente, representative of Mexico’s permanent mission to the UN, reiterated Argentina’s support for its sovereign right to the Malvinas Islands.

In the session of the 4th Committee of the United Nations General Assembly held on Monday, De la Fuente pointed out that the dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom is incomprehensible given the validity of international law and the peaceful settlement of disputes.

“Mexico affirms, with absolute conviction and the greatest forcefulness, the legal and historical validity of the rights that assist the Argentine Republic in the sovereignty dispute over the Malvinas, South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands and the maritime spaces that surround them. . The Malvinas are from Argentina”, he declared during his speech.

The Mexican representative urged that the negotiations be resumed and that a solution be sought through peaceful means.

“It is essential that Argentina and the United Kingdom resume negotiations in good faith to reach a fair, peaceful, definitive and mutually acceptable solution to the question of the Malvinas Islands, in accordance with the relevant United Nations resolutions,” he added.

He reiterated that both Argentina and the United Kingdom must refrain from adopting decisions that involve the introduction of unilateral changes in the situation until the negotiations yield a definitive solution to the dispute.

“We reiterate the legitimate rights of the Argentine Republic, in accordance with resolution 2065 (XX) of the General Assembly, as well as with the resolutions of the Organization of American States (OAS), and the declaration of the Unity Summit, held in the Riviera Maya (Mexico), within the framework of CELAC”, he concluded.

In the case of Western Sahara, he stressed that Mexico endorses its commitment to support efforts to reach a just and lasting solution to the conflict and to listen to the will of the Saharawi people.
