Mexico asked the US to investigate the murder of three young Mexicans in Phoenix, Arizona: AMLO

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador asked the United States government for an investigation into the murder in Phoenix, Arizona of three young mexicans of indigenous origin in Oaxaca who emigrated in search of work.

In September 2021, Abimael Jiménez, Herminio and Isauro Martínez left their home in Santo Domingo Tepuxtepec, Oaxaca, and immigrated to the United States. On February 20 they were found dead with signs of torture in Phoenix, Arizona.

The three young men did gardening, dishwashing, cleaning floors. Their relatives in Mexico say that the last time they heard from them was on February 20, when they called to say that they would travel to Colorado because they were offered a better job. Days later the three were found dead.

During his morning conference this Wednesday at the National Palace, President López Obrador said that in his meeting yesterday with the ambassador Ken Salazardid not address this issue because the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) is already following up on an investigation in the United States.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Secretary Marcelo Ebrard, has been dealing with it for a few days, a thorough investigation is being required to rule out that they have been torturedmurdered, by US authorities, that investigation is being carried out,” he said.

Zaqueo Bautista Martínez, 16-year-old cousin of Abimael Jiménez, said that his relative was unable to continue his studies in Oaxaca due to the poverty and marginalization of him and his family, so he decided to migrate in search of a better quality of life.

Bautista said that in order to return oaxaca The body of his cousin requires $18,000, an amount they do not have.

Santo Domingo Tepuxtepec is a municipality of 4,815 inhabitants located in the District of Mixe, Oaxaca. Of the total inhabitants, 87% speak an indigenous language. There is a very high degree of marginalization, since 61.86% of the population lives in conditions of extreme poverty.
