The Government of Mexico became the Border Patrol of the United States: Detain and expel, says to 14ymedio the lawyer and defender of migrants José Luis Pérez Jiménez. “Clandestine deportations have been presented recently, on Cubans despite the fact that they have suspensions granted by the district judges.”
Mexico repatriated 49 undocumented Cubans. According to information from the Cuban Ministry of the Interior (Minint), there have been 1,459 expulsions since January 2022.
“It is clear that there are bilateral commitments between Mexico and the United States to contain migrants, although in many of these cases people’s rights are being violated,” says Pérez.
Data from the Minint indicate that Mexico and the United States repatriated a new group of Cubans to the island, which now adds up to 4,361 expulsions so far this year, including the Bahamas and the Cayman Islands.
Meanwhile, “the Coast Guard Service The US returned 47 irregular migrants in operation number 55 of the year, for a total of 2,640 Cubans repatriated through this route,” according to the source.
From last October to July 6, 157,339 Cubans have arrived in the United States by land
The immigration authorities of the Island indicated that the largest number of migrants returned to the Caribbean country corresponds to the United States.
In recent months, the flow of irregular Cuban migrants seeking to enter the neighboring nation by sea or following different routes through various Central American countries such as Nicaragua, Panama and Honduras has increased.
The US Department of Customs and Border Protection reported that from last October to July 6, 157,339 Cubans have arrived in that territory by land.
The figure exceeds the largest exodus of Cubans to date, in 1980, when 125,000 people left through the port of Mariel in just seven months.
The Cuban government demands that Washington comply with the bilateral migratory agreements, according to which the United States must deliver 20,000 visas a year.
Havana assures that that figure has not been executed for four consecutive years.
He also blames Washington for stimulating irregular migration by granting “privileges” to Cubans who try to enter that territory, in particular due to the validity of the Cuban Adjustment Act of 1966.
This regulation allows Cubans to apply for permanent residence in the United States after one year and one day of being in that country.
