The 17th Cuba-Mexico Interparliamentary Meeting, held yesterday in Havana, concluded with a joint declaration in which the legislators highlighted the profound impact that the pandemic has had on Latin American and Caribbean societies, especially on health systems, the labor market , public transport and education, and underlined the enormous potential for strengthening cooperation to purchase vaccines and medicines.

In this logic, the parliamentary delegations of both countries agreed to promote the exchange of services, equipment and biotechnological products, in order to improve the provision of health services in the region.

In that meeting, in which eight senators participated, including the president of the Committee on Foreign Relations for Latin America and the Caribbean, Beatriz Paredes, former Mexican ambassador to the island, as well as 12 deputies from the Mexico-Cuba Friendship Group, Another of the agreements was to guarantee orderly and safe migratory flows to confront illegal trafficking and human trafficking.

In the seven-page joint statement, the Mexican legislators and the deputies of the National Assembly of the People’s Power of Cuba (ANPP) expressed concern about the humanitarian crisis generated by the military conflict in Ukraine and spoke for a peaceful solution in accordance with the principles of international law and the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations.

The Mexican delegation spoke out against the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed on the island by the United States and, together with the Cuban delegation, called on the US government and its Congress to comply with the resolutions approved by the UN on this matter.

Last night, after also agreeing to increase commercial, scientific and sports exchange and cooperation in health matters, the Mexican legislators attended a dinner offered by the Cuban parliamentarians.

This Saturday both delegations will tour the Pharmaceutical Scientific Corridor, where the BioCubaFarma facilities are located, and at night the Mexicans will offer a reception to the Cuban deputies.
