Mexican Police detain 67 Cubans hidden in houses on the border with the US

The municipal authorities of Piedras Negras, a Mexican city bordering the United States, arrested 67 Cubans between last Thursday and Friday. The migrants were arrested in two different tours of the Altamira neighborhood, where several houses used by coyoteshe says 14ymedio Manuel, an agent of the Civil Police of the state of Coahuila.

“Migration makes constant tours of the neighborhood, but now they are using stores, hairdressers, chelerías (breweries) and even stationery stores as a front to hide undocumented immigrants,” the officer explains. Last Thursday they were alerted about an alleged clandestine party in a mechanical workshop located on Negrete street in the Altamira neighborhood.

51 migrants were found at the scene, including 46 Cubans. “These people were in a room and had been there for a week, waiting to be transferred to the United States,” the officer said. “They are looking for the owner of the workshop, who has not appeared at the scene since the operation.”

The group of detainees was transferred to the state security facilities, where Immigration personnel took them to a station to start the corresponding procedures.

“Of those detained, 27 presented documents that support the start of procedures to obtain a humanitarian visa,” the office of the National Institute of Migration (INM) of the state of Coahuila told this newspaper. “The problem is that they carried out the process in other states and their situation is being evaluated.”

Last Friday, on an embankment in the Altamira neighborhood, the municipal police intercepted 21 migrants, 10 men, nine women, a 17-year-old minor and a 6-year-old minor, who were waiting for a person who summoned them at the crossing of the Abraham González and Zacatecas streets and that would take them to the vicinity of the Rio Grande.

In the last week, 91 Cuban migrants who entered the country irregularly have been detained in the city of Piedras Negras. “12 people got humanitarian visa application approved and they were given a QR, with which they were able to leave the migratory terminal”, he details 14ymedio an INM agent from Coahuila.

Data provided by Civil Protection Commander Francisco Contreras confirm that so far in February, 462 Cubans with QR have been reported entering Piedras Negras. In the vicinity of the Rio Grande, 287 undocumented immigrants have been intercepted between February 24 and 27.

In the INM there is a list of deportations still without an exit date, in which 31 Cubans appear. On February 25, a flight left the Tapachula International Airport in which 71 Cubans were deported: 68 were in the Siglo XXI migration station in Tapachula and three in the state of Nuevo León.
