Mexican judge froze the extradition of the son of "El Chapo" Guzmán to the US

The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, assured that in the capture of Ovidio Guzmán, son of “Chapo” they acted with “autonomy”; after being asked if this operation was related to the arrival of the president of the United States, Joe Biden, in Mexico

A Mexican federal judge froze this Friday, January 6, the extradition to the United States of Ovidio Guzmán, one of the sons of Joaquín “el Chapo” Guzmán most wanted by Washington and arrested on Thursday, by granting him an amparo.

The judge suspended “the acts consisting of deportation, expulsion, extradition and their execution.” This is indicated in file 24/2023 of the Sixth Court of the Amparo District in Criminal Matters of Mexico City.

This “so that they are not executed and the complainant remains in the place where he is at the disposal of this court, only in relation to his personal freedom and is not turned over to the government of the United States of America, nor to no diverse state.

The magistrate granted another amparo to avoid the drug trafficker’s solitary confinement, which allows him to contact his relatives and defense attorneys.

The judge’s decision stems from the amparo appeals filed by his defense lawyers, who requested the suspension of the extradition process.

The federal judge also urged the “assigned actuary (competent official) to attest to the physical state of the complainant (detainee); and if at first sight he shows traces of injuries ».

29 dead in the arrest of “El Chapo”

The operation to arrest Ovidio Guzmán, son of imprisoned drug trafficker Joaquín “Chapo” Guzmán, on Thursday left ten soldiers and 19 suspected criminals dead, the Mexican government reported this Friday, January 6.

“Ten soldiers (…) unfortunately lost their lives in the line of duty,” Defense Secretary Luis Cresencio Sandoval told the press, indicating that “19 deaths were also recorded by lawbreakers.”

A colonel who commanded an infantry battalion is among those killed, after his patrol was attacked during operations after Guzmán’s capture in the city of Culiacán, Sandoval explained.

Another 35 soldiers suffered gunshot wounds and are receiving hospital care, while 21 gunmen were arrested.

“There is no information on any innocent civilian who has lost their lives,” said the general during the daily conference of the Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

In the midst of the offensive by the members of the Sinaloa Cartel to rescue their boss, a passenger plane was also hit —moments before taking off— and two aircraft of the Mexican Air Force.

The official ships “had to make an emergency landing, despite the fact that they had received a significant number of impacts,” said the Secretary of Defense. None of those incidents left anyone injured.

AMLO denies that the capture is related to Biden’s visit

The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, assured that in the capture of Ovidio Guzmán they acted with “autonomy”; after being asked if this operation was related to the arrival of the president of the United States, Joe Biden, in Mexico.

The Mexican president denied that the operation in Culiacán, Sinaloa, had been planned for the arrival of Biden, who will visit the country as part of the North American Leaders Summit in which Biden, AMLO and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, will hold meetings to discuss key issues for the region.

“About the interpretations there are many, we do not share them, we act autonomously,” said AMLO.

Regarding the situation in Culiacán, López Obrador reported that the presence of “elements of the Secretary of Defense of the National Guard” and the State Police will be maintained to prevent harm to the civilian population in Sinaloa.
