MIAMI, United States. – The Government of Mexico offered help to the Cuban regime in the face of the “energy emergency” that the Island has been going through since last Friday. The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs advertisement this Monday that its embassy in Havana had “timely expressed its willingness to provide support to the Cuban people in the face of the difficult situation they face.”
The situation in Cuba has become critical after five days without electricity supply, which has caused the massive closure of schools, the collapse of hospitals and has forced many citizens to cook on the streets. Besides, At least 28 protests have been registered in seven provinces of the country.
The Mexican Foreign Minister, Juan Ramón de la Fuente, “is in permanent contact with his Cuban counterpart, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, and the Mexican embassy in Cuba does the same with the competent authorities to have updated information on the situation,” reported the chancellery through its social networks. “Likewise, it has made emergency lines available to compatriots in that country for their permanent attention,” he added.
The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) of Mexico also offered “its technical support for the prompt restoration of electrical energy.”
Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Cuban regime, thanked the help offered by Mexico and other countries through their social networks: “We appreciate the efforts and immediate support offered by the governments of Venezuela, Mexico, Colombia, Russia and Barbados to address the current situation of the national electroenergy system. “Cuba is in talks to finalize receipt of this aid.”
Although the Cuban regime continues to blame the United States embargo as triggering the national blackout, Prime Minister Manuel Marrero recognized that “the state of the infrastructure, the lack of fuel and the increase in demand” are determining factors in the current situation.
This Monday, White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre stated in a press conference that Washington continued to monitor the situation on the island and did not rule out support, but that the Cuban regime had not requested formal help.
According to a report from the agency EFE, The official explained that Joe Biden’s administration monitors the energy situation in Cuba, which could impact the lives of Cubans.
“We are concerned about the possible humanitarian impact on the Cuban people,” he stated, adding that Cuba’s economic conditions are the result of “prolonged mismanagement of its policies and resources,” which have worsened the difficulties of the population.
Jean-Pierre also ruled out that USA had some responsibility for the blackouts and the crisis, in response to the regime’s statements that blamed the “blockade” for the debacle of the electro-energy system.
He also pointed out that the Cuban Government “has not requested any aid so far” and that the Biden Administration did not rule out providing it.
