The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, assured this Monday that she will continue sending humanitarian aid to Cuba, while describing it as “very unfair” that the United States is imposing tariffs on countries that export oil to the island, considering that they directly affect the population.
“Yes, there will be more support. The people of Mexico are always supportive. No one can ignore the situation that the people of Cuba are experiencing at this moment due to the sanctions that are being imposed on any country that sends oil from the United States in a very unfair way,” declared the president during her morning press conference.
Sheinbaum’s reaction occurs amid tensions over the measures announced by Washington, which contemplate tariffs on nations that trade oil with Havana, which has led the Mexican Government to send humanitarian aid for the first time over the weekend to the island, mainly food.
The Mexican president maintained that the sending of support will continue in the form of humanitarian assistance and emphasized the solidarity nature of this foreign policy.
“So, we are going to help the people of Cuba, as always, we help people in need at any time. That is the essence of the people of Mexico, the brotherhood of support. And now mainly food has been sent and more will be sent and we will support whatever is needed,” he said.

The president reiterated her rejection of the sanctions and assured that their impact falls on the population and not necessarily on the Cuban authorities.
“In fact, this sanction that is being imposed on the countries that sell oil to Cuba is very unfair. Very unfair. It is not right. Because the sanctions that affect the people are not right. One can agree or not with the Cuban government regime. But the people should never be affected,” he said.
Likewise, he indicated that Mexico will continue with diplomatic efforts to resume the shipment of hydrocarbons and to express its disagreement in international forums.
“We are going to continue supporting and continue doing all the necessary diplomatic actions to be able to recover the oil shipment. Because you cannot hang a people like that in that way, very unfair, very unfair. So, a call for there not to be these sanctions and for the people to always be supported,” he expressed.
The president explained that the US decree provides for tariffs on countries that export crude oil to Cuba, so her Government seeks to avoid repercussions for Mexico.
Mexico must take the “diplomatic initiative” between the US and Cuba, says former ambassador
“We are taking all diplomatic actions to prevent tariffs from being imposed on Mexico for sending oil to Cuba. And also making an international call from the United States,” he stated.
The sending of aid from Mexico occurs days after Víctor Rodríguez Padilla, director of Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex), assured that the state company sent oil to the island for 496 million dollars in 2025.
In recent days, Mexico acknowledged that it has stopped shipments to the island to avoid the activation of tariffs by the United States, although it indicated that it will continue sending humanitarian aid.
