Mexican authorities detain eight Cuban migrants after landing on Isla Mujeres

MADRID, Spain.- A group of eight Cuban migrants was detained this December 26 after making landfall on Isla Mujeres, located in Cancun, Quintana Roo, the National Institute of Migration (INM) of Mexico reported through the social network Twitter.

“The National Institute of Migration of Mexico, in coordination with the Ninth Naval Region of the Secretary of the Navy, attends the arrival of a raft to Isla Mujeres (Cancun, Quintana Roo) of eight migrants from Cuba,” indicated the Tweet.

The publication is accompanied by an image where Cubans are observed, apparently in good health conditions, being cared for by the authorities of the Aztec country.

The eight migrants were placed in the custody of immigration authorities, who will decide their fate.

So far it is unknown if the objective of the Antilleans was to reach Mexico, or if their destination was to reach the coast of the United States, but the sea and the conditions of the raft prevented them from doing so.

Every week, dozens of Cubans approach the Florida coast, where they are generally intercepted by agents of the United States Coast Guard (USCG) and then deported to the island. Many of them perish at sea. before reaching land.
