The National Institute of Statistics (INE) provided the figures for the foreign population as usual residents in Chile. The amount reached 1,482,390. people, which translates into an increase of 1.5%. The greatest presence is recorded by Venezuelans.
According to the analysis carried out between the INE, the National Migration Service (Sermig) in conjunction with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Minrel), the Investigative Police (PDI) and the Civil Registry, the estimate was made with data as of December 31. of 2021 at the national, regional and for the main communes of the country.
For this, census figures and various administrative records of the institutions linked to the migration process were taken, establishing the presence of 1,482,390 foreigners in national territory. This translates into a relative increase of 1.5% compared to 2020, after the arrival of 22,343 migrants.
According to estimates, Venezuelans lead the ranking with 30%. They are followed by people of Peruvian nationality (16.6), Haitian (12.2%), Colombian (11.7%), Bolivian (8.9%) and Argentine (5.2%).
Data in regions
At the regional level, the INE indicated that the area with the highest concentration of migrants is the Metropolitan region, with 61.3% of the total. It is followed by Antofagasta (7.2%) and in third place is Valparaíso (6.5%).
The regions that maintain the greatest difference between the administrative records and those of the last Census (2017), are those of Maule with 73.3%, O’Higgins (70%) and Ñuble (68.1%).
