Metro Line 1 not fully reopened days after change of government in Mexico City

This project with a budget of 37,000 million pesos to be paid in 19 years is one of the main ones of the Sheinbaum government, as it is the oldest line in the transportation system with more than 50 years of operation.

It was then announced that this first stage would be ready in March 2023, to begin immediately with the second section from Balderas to Observatorio.

A work inherited by Sheinbaum

In February 2023, the then head of government and future president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, together with the general director of the Metro, Guillermo Calderón, led the delivery of the civil works of the first section of Line 1, although they changed the dates for the reopening, noting that tests were still required.

“The line will be completed by the end of the year (2023), the second phase (from Balderas to Observatorio) will be completed in December of this year. There has already been a learning curve, the different teams and companies are already trained with equipment and the track devices are already coming,” said the director of the Metro on February 28, 2023.

However, the first section did not reopen until October 29, 2023, that is, eight months later than planned, and two stations, Pino Suárez and Isabel la Católica, were partially operational.

Due to the delay in the first stage, the work on the section from Balderas to Observatorio, which was planned to begin in March and be completed in August 2023, did not begin until November 9 of that same year.

Without the work being completed and the project operating at 100%, Sheinbaum’s promise will be passed on to the next head of government, Clara Brugada, after passing through Martí Batres.
