The legal representative of the legendary Metro-Goldwyn Mayer in Uruguay states in a warrant that the North American studio is the owner and co-owner of the copyright of the works of “Pink Panther/Pantera Rosa” as well as “The Return of the Pink Panther”, “The Pink Panther Strikes Again”, “The Revenge of the Pink Panther”, “The Pink Panther” (2006) and “The Pink Panther 2, among others”.
In addition, it is the owner of the registered trademark in Uruguay “Pink Panther”, until July 14, 2027.
It also states that “it holds the exclusive right over said image, sound and sequence, and is entitled to prevent the use of the same or similar to its own, as well as the right to protect its reputation and integrity against consumers who could be led to confusion.
Metro-Goldwyn Mayer, which also owns the legendary and somewhat clumsy Inspector Clouseau, indicates that by using the image of the Pink Panther, “intellectual property and copyright rights are violated.”
For this reason, the legal representative of the firm indicates that “there may be “unfair competition, unauthorized use, and/or damage to the image and reputation”. In this sense, it intimates to stop using the logo and the sound of the animated character.
David and Goliat
For his part, the president of FANCAP, Gerardo Rodríguez, questioned the restriction of freedom to carry out the campaign. It is the fight of David against Goliath.
“We were denied the chain, advertising in the Centenario stadium, banners and now use the image of the Pink Panther. This reaffirms that we are on the right path. It gives us more strength,” he said.
Rodríguez pointed out that the Commission’s efforts are focused on the campaign. “We are not going to waste a minute on things that are incidental. If it’s not the Pink Panther, then it will be some cousin.”
