Santo Domingo.– The strong wind and cold air recorded in the last few hours on Dominican soil are associated with the presence of a so-called «bomb cyclone«, located in the north of the Atlantic, east of the United States.
This phenomenon has caused a notable drop in temperatures in the Dominican Republic. In addition, the cold wind coming from Florida has generated rain in some provinces, such as Puerto Plata, in the northern region of the country, which remains under a green alert.
According to the forecasts of the Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet), the bomb cyclone is expected to lose intensity starting this Tuesday, which would allow temperatures to begin to normalize in the national territory.
On Monday afternoon, the system was located between North Carolina, in the United States, and the Bermuda Islands.

These systems correspond to mid-latitude storms that experience a drastic drop in atmospheric pressure in a short period, generally in less than 24 hours. Scientifically, this phenomenon is known as bombogenesis or explosive cyclogenesis.
The cold air and winds associated with this system were combined with the presence of a cold front on Dominican soil, which began to move away from our area of influence during the afternoon of Monday.
