Messages and apps can lead you to fall for a scam

Aplicativo

A few days ago, the Superintendency of Banking, Insurance and AFP (SBS) warned about new applications of fraudulent loans which not only have high interest rates, but can also lead to an attack on the lives of those who download them.

The Senior Supervisor of Informal Activities of the SBSJessica Bárcena explained that, to identify these criminals, you must first verify that the app has a backing company.

“If there is a legal entity that supports it, I go to the Superintendency’s website and check if it is reported as a fraudulent application. Also, if it is not registered, I contact the SBS to make my inquiry,” he said.

He warned that, by simply downloading this app, you already authorize access to your gallery, contacts and the information you have stored. With this data, you could be the victim of extortion or some kind of scam.

“People who urgently need access to this money are easy victims for these criminals,” he said.

To date, the SBS has identified 29 informal loan applications, of which four were removed by Google Play at the request of the Superintendency.

MESSAGES

But these scams are not limited to apps. The SBS representative said that victims are also sought through social networks and text messages.

How does this scam work? Jessica Bárcena explained that they offer users a loan at rates lower than those on the market.

“They ask them to deposit a prior guarantee, which can be 10% or 20%, and that is supposedly going to be deducted from the amount that has to be paid on the loan. The person makes the deposit and then there is no loan,” he said.

For this reason, he recommended blocking numbers and accounts, and if the communication is recurrent, “go to the Police or the Public Prosecutor’s Office to file a criminal complaint.” He warned that through messages or applications, scammers use names similar to well-known companies or financial entities, to confuse the victim.

You can contact the SBS to make inquiries or file administrative complaints regarding these scams by calling 0-800-10840 (toll-free) or 01-200-1930. You can also write to [email protected].
