“We can say with satisfaction that the conclusion of the feasibility study of an FTA with China is positive,” Uruguayan President Luis Lacalle Pou said last Wednesday at a press conference.
The issue will be raised at the Mercosur summit scheduled for this Thursday in Asunción and approval will require that the member countries of the bloc reach a consensus.
Argentina is strongly opposed to bilateral agreements with third countries. It is unknown what position Brazil (whose president will not attend) and Paraguay will assume.
In the event that all the members of Mercosur do not have the consent, Lacalle Pou considers that, even so, he has legal support.
At the same conference, he indicated that his claim is supported by international law and by the treaties signed by his country.
Another pending issue for the summit is the request of the Government of Ukraine to agree to a dialogue with the members of Mercosur. The approach was made to our country, which is in the exercise of the Pro Tempore Presidency and which, through the Foreign Ministry, agreed to answer, after consulting all the partners, since consensus is needed.
