Uruguayan writer Mercedes Vigilexpressed his discomfort on social networks about the suspension of a round table in the Buenos Aires Book Fair 2023which was organized by dictatorship deniers and of the existence of violations to the rights and hands and of disappeared detainees.
The El Libro Foundation canceled the round table scheduled for May 4, and had been entitled “Round Table on Human Rights and the Rule of Law in the countries of the Río de la Plata.” This call was intended to discuss the trial against the military who committed crimes against humanity during the Argentine dictatorship.
The organization of this controversial round table was in charge of several civil organizations that deny the existence of disappeared persons or the violations of human rights in this dark process. One of the exhibitors was José D’Angelo Rodríguez, author of the book “The scam of the disappeared. Lies and millions ”, in which he talks about alleged fraudulent payments to relatives of the disappeared in Argentina.
The moderators of the event were the journalist Ignacio Bracht and the Uruguayan writer Mercedes Vigil. “That the human rights organizations continue to refer to the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo is the clearest proof that they are a business that is far removed from human rights…”, Vigil said on her Twitter account when ranting against the elimination of the event.
The suspension of the act was communicated by the El Libro Foundation to the Center for Human Rights Studies of Uruguay. “They transmitted the decision two hours after the news was broadcast on Page 12 and on social networks,” sources from the organizing entities alerted.
“I am writing to you regarding the event ‘Analysis of the situation of human rights in the Río de la Plata’, which was scheduled to take place at the Buenos Aires International Book Fair on 5/4. After a review, the foundation has decided to suspend it due to the application of article 5.3 of its regulations”, reported the El Libro Foundation, according to the Argentine newspaper The nation.
After the publication of Página/12, the organization Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo contacted the organizers of the Book Fair to show their repudiation of this denialist round table. “Our history requires us to exercise Never Again on a daily basis. The denialism of State terrorism is a limit. We must not allow it to be transferred ”, they expressed from the NGO that presides Carlotto’s Stela.
In Grandmothers they were very satisfied with the response they received from the Fundación El libro that led to the cancellation of the event in question.
Mercedes Vigil, strong defender of the repressors
Vigil is a renowned Uruguayan writer who is part of the Montevideo Forum and has recently been one of the voices calling for the release of the repressors who are in the Domingo Arena prison.
In November 2021, he met with President Luis Lacalle Pou to request house arrest for those over 65 years of age.
Recently, he also criticized the tribute to the girls of april, a group of young people who were massacred by the military of the dictatorship in a private home. “honor terrorists The direct consequence is that young people learn that going out to steal and kill is a laudable act. The results of these messages are visible in a society that is becoming more violent every day,” said the writer.
Yesterday the Book Foundation that organizes the Buenos Aires Book Fair has prohibited the round table in which we would discuss the situation of human rights in the region.https://t.co/fwhQLzW73Opic.twitter.com/W1ejysxuDY
