The future president of the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES), Aloizio Mercadante, announced today (21) the new directors of the financial institution. Among the names are former ministers, businessmen and members of the financial market.
The names were announced during an event for businessmen in São Paulo. After the event, Mercadante gave a press conference in which he confirmed the names.
According to Mercadante, the development bank will be oriented “for the future”. The institution, he said, will seek to finance innovation in the industry and revitalize activities in social and environmental projects. He also promised the expansion of credit for micro and small companies and credit unions.
The future president of the institution also announced that the BNDES will seek external sources of funds to compensate for restrictions in the 2023 Budget, such as the Amazon Fund, which had R$ 1 billion on hold and which will be released. Mercadante announced that the bank will try to resume a partnership with China to create a US$ 10 billion fund with the BNDES and said that Europe has 55 billion euros in socio-environmental financing to offer to other countries.
The announced directors were as follows:
• Financial Director: Alexandre Abreu, president of Banco do Brasil in 2015 and 2016 and former president of Banco Original;
• Planning Board: Nelson Barbosa, former Minister of Finance and Planning;
• Capital Markets Director: Natalia Dias, president of Standard Bank Brasil
• Innovation Board: José Luis Gordon, former president of the Brazilian Company for Research and Industrial Innovation (Embrapii);
• Social Board: Tereza Campello, former Minister of Social Development and one of the creators of Bolsa Família;
• Green Economy Board: Luciana Costa, president of the Brazilian subsidiary of the French investment bank Natixis;
Barbosa and Campello participated in the transition team. The first acted as coordinator of the economics technical group. Campello was one of the coordinators of the Social Assistance group. During the event, Mercadante also announced the former Minister of Comptroller General of the Union Luíz Navarro to assume a position in the bank, but did not inform the position.
