MEP wants to know if Dora María Téllez “is still alive”

Cenidh: "The life of Dora María Téllez is in danger in El Chipote"

The MEP Javier Nart, godfather of the political prisoner Nicaraguan Dora María Téllez, demanded that the Daniel Ortega regime allow a visit by the International Committee of the Red Cross to verify the state of health of the person who is on a hunger strike and to find out “if she is still alive.”

In a video released on social networks by Tamara Suju, director of the Casla Institute —NGO that runs the Breaking Chains campaign, sponsors a political prisoner— Nart blames the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo for what may happen to Téllez in the jail.

«Dora María Téllez, an exemplary woman, a woman who always fought for freedom, who risked her life. Ironically, he risked his life together with those who today want to take it away from him, he is taking it away from him, I am referring to the president of Nicaragua, who continues to claim to be a Sandinista, but who has nothing to do with that clean action that sought the freedom of Nicaragua. A freedom that does not exist today, ”said the Spanish deputy before the European Parliament.

The political prisoners detained in the Directorate of Judicial Assistance (DAJ), known as “El Chipote”, where Dora María Téllez is, have been isolated and incommunicado for 75 days, without receiving visits from their relatives and subjected to a series of cruel, inhumane treatment and degrading, according to human rights organizations.

«Dora María Téllez has been imprisoned for more than a year in the terrible prison of «El Chipote», that «Chipote» that I heard Daniel Ortega speak when I met him in San José, Costa Rica and who spoke to me like a prison terrible, which was the symbol of Anastasio Somoza’s repression and today is the symbol of Daniel Ortega’s repression,” Nart said.

“Dora María Téllez has not heard from her, her family or any international organization for 70 days. I request the regime to allow a visit by the International Red Cross to Dora María Téllez, the exemplary and heroic Nicaraguan Sandinista, to know her condition, something so fundamental, even to know if she is still alive. Death for which she will be responsible, one more, the dictator Daniel Ortega », she added.

Dora María Téllez was violently and arbitrarily detained on June 13, 2021. In parallel, the Ortega Police arrested other leaders of the Unión Democrática Renovadora (Unamos), including Víctor Hugo Tinoco, Ana Margarita Vijil, Suyen Barahona and Hugo Torres, who died under police guard on February 12, 2022.
