Mental health: Keys to detect if someone is facing emotional difficulties

In Peru, between January and July 2024, the Ministry of Health – MINSA, reported 1,320 suicide attempts, which represents an increase of 8% compared to the same period in 2023.

”It is essential to reflect on the importance of mental health and learn to identify warning signs that could indicate that a loved one is facing an emotional crisisl”, advises Edgardo Llerena, neuropsychologist director of CENAP of Rímac.

Globally, suicide is also a major public health challenge, with more than 700,000 deaths each year, according to the World Health Organization-WHO. “As a society, we must raise awareness about the importance of reducing stigma and encouraging open conversations to prevent suicides. Change the narrative about how we perceive this very complex issue, moving from a culture of silence and stigmatization to one of openness, understanding and support,” he comments.

In this context, it is important to be attentive to the signs that indicate that someone may be at risk. The free platform of the insurance company Rímac, Estar Bien, provides Tips to identify them:

Persistent sadness: Sadness is an emotion that we all feel at some point, but when it lasts longer, it can be a sign that something is not right. If sadness persists for more than two weeks, despite attempts to overcome it, it could be a depressive disorder.

Anhedonia: lloss of interest in or ability to enjoy activities that normally please you or used to cheer you up, They can be signs of depression. In this state, the times when you can experience pleasure are reduced and the times when you experience discomfort increase.

Hopelessness: It is an emotional state characterized by a deep feeling that there is no solution or improvement possible in the future. Those who experience hopelessness often feel that their efforts are useless and that nothing they do will change their situation. When thoughts or comments occur such as “I don’t see a way out”, “I feel trapped” or “I would prefer not to be here” They must be taken seriously.

Increase in the use of substances such as alcohol or drugs: Excessive substance use can be an unhealthy strategy for coping with emotional pain and can increase the risk of impulsive behaviors.

Sleep disturbance: It is common for the person to experience difficulties falling asleep, staying asleep at night or, on the contrary, feeling excessive sleepiness during the day, which interferes with their daily activities. Additionally, you may see a marked decrease in your energy level, constant fatigue, and problems concentrating on tasks.

Changes in appetite: A significant change in appetite, whether due to excess or lack of it, is a sign to take into account. This can be reflected in an unintentional change in body weight.

Do not hesitate to contact specialized help lines, mental health centers or professionals trained to provide assistance,” concludes Edgardo Llerena.
