Chronic stress, excessive workload, hostile environments, among other conditions are risk factors in the world of work, a problem that can affect not only the mental health of workers, but also impact their physical health. Faced with this situation, companies and employers must establish measures and strategies to generate healthy work environments.

Every October 10, the World Health Organization (WHO) celebrates World Mental Health Day, a commemoration that this year has the motto “It’s time to prioritize mental health in the workplace,” in response to the existing threats in these environments, which affect the quality of life in general and, consequently, participation or productivity at work.

The WHO notes that 60% of the world’s population works, so urgent measures are needed to ensure that work prevents mental health risks and protects and supports mental health at work.

“Mental health is the fundamental pillar of comprehensive well-being, since it is an essential part of a person’s general well-being. A healthy work environment not only prevents psychological disorders, but also contributes to emotional balance, which translates into more effective work performance,” explains James Yhon Robles, psychologist, coordinator of the Institute of Neuroscience (INU) and director of the course. of Psychology from the Franz Tamayo University, Unifranz.

Robles adds that mentally healthy employees tend to be more productive, motivated and committed, resulting in better performance and positive results for the company. Additionally, a focus on mental health fosters more positive work relationships, reduces conflict, and improves collaboration between teams.

The WHO notes that mental health problems have a direct impact on workplaces by increasing absenteeism, reducing productivity and increasing healthcare costs. However, stigma and lack of mental health awareness persist as barriers to addressing mental health in the workplace.

“Prioritizing mental health in the work environment is crucial because it leads to better overall performance; By taking care of the mental health of their employees, companies see an increase in productivity, since workers feel more motivated and committed to their tasks,” says Robles.

In this regard, Miguel Velarde, coordinator of Human Capital Selection and Training at Unifranz, indicates that, beyond the need to regulate their care and, in addition, be an ethical and responsible practice, the mental health of workers has several benefits. for companies because it is a key component of individual well-being.

“Companies that care about the health of their workers retain human talent and build a positive employer brand. A simple demonstration of genuine commitment to the mental health of employees tends to have a better brand reputation in the labor market,” he explains.

This, in turn, can benefit the company in terms of recruiting new talent and public relations to attract clients and potential new partners.

“Organizations that prioritize the mental health of their employees tend to have a healthier work environment and be more successful in terms of productivity, talent retention and employer brand,” Velarde points out.

For Liudmila Loayza, psychotherapist and university professor, an environment that supports mental health can reduce absenteeism, since employees feel supported and are less likely to need days off for mental health problems.

“Organizations that implement mental wellness programs also typically experience lower employee turnover rates, which decreases the costs associated with hiring and training new employees. Finally, when employees feel that their mental health is valued, their job satisfaction improves, which in turn enriches the organizational climate,” he says.

How to take care of the mental health of workers?

The neuroscience expert points out that there are various strategies that allow developing a balance in mental health at work, such as the implementation of well-being programs that offer resources such as meditation, mindfulness and relaxation exercises, which are very beneficial.

“Access to mental health services can also be provided through employee assistance programs (EAP) making it easier for workers to receive the necessary support. Mental health training for managers and employees is also crucial, as it helps recognize signs of problems and fosters a supportive environment,” says Robles.

Additionally, promoting a work-life balance through flexible scheduling policies and disconnection outside of work hours helps employees manage stress effectively.

“Finally, it is essential to foster an environment of open communication where employees feel comfortable expressing their concerns without fear of retaliation, which strengthens a supportive culture in the organization,” he adds.

The risks of not taking care of the mental health of workers

Loayza, for his part, points out that mental health is fully integrated into the work context, where chronic stress, the result of factors such as excessive workload, lack of control over work and a hostile environment, can lead to conditions such as anxiety and depression.

“Burnout, or professional burnout syndrome, manifests itself through emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and a feeling of ineffectiveness, being common in professions with a high degree of human interaction and responsibility. Furthermore, anxiety disorders, such as generalized anxiety disorder, can be exacerbated by a stressful work environment, while adverse working conditions, lack of social support and performance pressures contribute significantly to the development of depression among employees. ”, concludes the academic.
