With the end of the first round of the 2024 municipal elections, in addition to candidate Eduardo Paes (PSD), re-elected to the mayor of Rio de Janeiro with 60.47% of the votes (1,861,856), the capital of Rio de Janeiro had 51 councilors elected to occupy the Pedro Ernesto Palace, headquarters of the Chamber.
Paes’ Social Democratic Party (PSD) led in the number of elected candidates, with 16 councilors, three more than the previous bench. Then came the Liberal Party (PL), with seven seats; the Workers’ Party (PT), with four; the Socialism and Freedom Party (PSOL), with four; the Brazilian Democratic Movement (MDB) with three; the Progressives (PP), with three; the Republicans, with three, and Podemos, with two.
Green Party (PV), União Brasil (UNIÃO), Solidariedade (SD), Christian Democracy (DC), Novo, Democratic Renewal Party (PRD), Brazilian Social Democracy Party (PSDB), Brazilian Socialist Party (PSB) and Democratic Party Labor (PDT) had a candidate for councilor elected.
The number of women elected increased from 11 to 12.
Carlos Bolsonaro (PL), son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, was the candidate with the most votes, with 130,480 votes (4.30%). In second place, Marcio Ribeiro (PSD) obtained 56,770 votes (1.87%) and Tainá de Paula (PT), in third, won 49,986 votes (1.65%). Days before the first round of elections, the candidate was the target of a shooting attack in Vila Isabel, in the north of Rio.
