A 22-year-old medical student was shot dead at close range, at around 2:50 am this Wednesday (20), on the steps of a hotel on Rua Cubatão, in Vila Mariana, south of São Paulo. The shot came from a police officer who was participating in an attack on student Marco Aurélio Cardenas Acosta. The action was recorded by a hotel security camera.
According to information from the State Secretariat of Public Security (SSP-SP), Acosta struck the police vehicle, tried to escape and when approached, “attacked” the police officers and was injured. The boy was taken to Ipiranga hospital, but he did not survive the injury.
The Civil and Military Police are investigating the circumstances of the student’s death. The SSP-SP announced that the police officers involved in the incident gave a statement, were indicted in an investigation and will remain away from operational activities until the investigations are concluded.
The weapon belonging to the police officer responsible for the shooting was seized and sent for forensic examination. “The images recorded by the body cameras (COPs) will be attached to the investigations conducted by the Military Police Internal Affairs and the Department of Homicide and Personal Protection (DHPP)”, stated the SSP SP.
