Brazilian soccer legend Pele thanked this Thursday for all the messages of support received after he was hospitalized for a “routine visit” related to his cancer treatment.
“Dear friends, I am in the hospital for my monthly visit. It always warms my heart to receive positive messages like these,” Pelé wrote on Instagram in the caption of a photo showing his portrait projected on a wall of the tower in Qatar illuminated while the one next to him wishes him a “speedy recovery” in English.
“Thanks to Qatar for this tribute, and to all those who send me good vibes,” added the 82-year-old former soccer player. The Brazilian team, which is in Qatar for the World Cup, had previously wished him “the best” for his health.
The Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo said in its medical bulletin on Wednesday that he had “been hospitalized for a reassessment of the chemotherapy treatment followed after the detection of a colon tumor in September 2021.” ‘King’ Pelé is in a private room in a “stable clinical condition,” the establishment said.
The former number 10, who is considered by many to be the best footballer of all time and who is the only one to have lifted the world trophy three times (1958, 1962, 1970), regularly visits the hospital to undergo chemotherapy sessions.
On October 23, Pelé, real name Edson Arantes do Nascimento, said he was “happy” to celebrate his 82nd birthday “in good health” in a video posted on Instagram.
On the same social network, he asked the Seleçao players to “bring the trophy home” on the day of Brazil’s first match in Qatar, won 2-0 over Serbia.
