The national vaccination campaign against measles, polio and rubella was activated in June by the Ministry of Health in clinics, hospitals, comprehensive diagnostic centers (CDI) and popular clinics. The polio vaccine is available for boys and girls between the ages of zero and five, while the measles and rubella vaccines should be given to boys and girls between the ages of one and five.
The National Academy of Medicine and four medical societies urged the Venezuelan population, through a statement released on November 24, to complete the vaccination schemes for boys and girls under five years of age, in addition to taking advantage of the national vaccination campaign against measles, polio and rubella.
In the letter, the institutions recalled that, together with drinking water and sewage, vaccines are one of the most effective methods to prevent diseases. They pointed out that vaccination coverage is less than 95% – the ideal percentage according to the World Health Organization – “which in turn represents a risk of an outbreak for any of them.”
According to the Pan American Health Organization, Venezuelan coverage against polio is less than 80% (the standard for preventing the disease). Venezuela joins Haiti, Peru and the Dominican Republic as “very high risk” countries for polio.
The medical societies of Infectious Diseases, Public Health, Paediatrics and Child Care and of Allergies, Asthma and Immunology invited the representatives of children under five years of age to go to their nearest vaccination center to complete the measles, polio and rubella.
“We insist, as scientific societies, that the Venezuelan population has the fundamental right to health, and vaccines are a very important pillar for this. Vaccines save lives, and are the most cost-effective measure for global public health,” the statement said.

The national vaccination campaign against these three diseases was activated in June by the Ministry of Health in outpatient clinics, hospitals, comprehensive diagnostic centers (CDI) and popular clinics. The polio vaccine is available for boys and girls between the ages of zero and five, while the measles and rubella vaccines should be given to boys and girls between the ages of one and five.
On May 16, the National Academy of Medicine He called on the authorities to “urgently” increase vaccination coverage for all diseases, especially against polio, to prevent new outbreaks. “Due to its risk of importation, the main risk factor for children under five years of age to acquire this disease is low vaccination coverage.”
