The Social Health Security (EsSalud) faces serious accusations after an alarming case of alleged medical negligence at Hospital III Iquitos, Loreto region.
Ophthalmologist Adriana Angélica Lozano Arcani has been identified as responsible for a procedure that would have caused serious infections in five patients undergoing cataract surgeries.
The infections, attributed to a possible hospital bacteria, caused irreversible damage to the sight of those affected. Among them, at least three people had to be transferred to the Edgardo Rebagliati Hospital in Lima, where an eye was removed to prevent the infection from reaching the brain.
Among the victims are nurse Lita Rengifo Flores (66), César Vela Cometivos, Jorge Poquiama Woo, Rolando Escobedo Rojas and Olinda Lozano de Chunga.
According to testimonies, all of them presented serious symptoms such as pain and eye irritation after surgery, which led to their return to the hospital in search of medical attention.
The family of Jorge Poquiama Woo expressed their indignation at the conditions of the transfer to Lima. According to one of the patient’s daughters, those affected were mobilized in the early morning hours, in precarious conditions and with the instruction not to reveal their real destination.
Likewise, the delay in emergency care and the lack of sensitivity in handling the situation were criticized.
